The site that we work on for this studio is the Calumet National Heritage Area.
Lying on both the states of Illinois and Indiana, it is a site of
diverse interest. In this site, patches of all kinds of land use could be found juxtaposing one another. An epitome is how industrial land use is directly
sitting next to precious natural preserves. We first studied how regional planning has been executed for practices like BIG. We then came up with our strategic regional plan.
The regional design proposal targets areas that are heavily contaminated from brownfields, superfund sites and landfills. It consists of multiple phases to clean the sites by phytoremediation,
and then to restore habitats, providing homes to some endangered species in the region as well as community development in denseresidential areas.
